The Latest: UK puts reserve soldiers on standby for Brexit

Jan 17, 2019

LONDON — The Latest on Brexit (all times local): 2:50 p.m. Britain has put military reservists on standby for permanent service in the event the country leaves the European Union without a divorce agreement to smooth the way. A cliff-edge "no-deal" Brexit on March 29 could bring gridlock at ports and disruption to the supply of goods because of the sudden need for customs checks and other measures. Armed Forces Minister Mark Lancaster says an order has been made allowing reservists to be called up for a year of permanent service as part of "contingency planning for a no-deal EU...

Facebook shuts hundreds of Russia-linked pages, accounts

Jan 17, 2019

LONDON — Facebook said Thursday it removed hundreds of Russia-linked pages, groups and accounts that it says were part of two big disinformation operations, in its latest effort to fight fake news. The social media company said it took action after finding two networks "that engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior" on its Facebook and Instagram platforms. Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said in a blog post that one network operated in countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltics, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The other focused on Ukraine. The people running the accounts represented themselves as independent...

May battles to keep Brexit on track after no-confidence win

Jan 17, 2019

LONDON — British Prime Minister Theresa May was consulting opposition parties and other lawmakers Thursday in a battle to put Brexit back on track after surviving a no-confidence vote, though there was little immediate sign of a breakthrough from talks branded a "stunt" by the main opposition leader. European Union countries were stepping up preparations for a disorderly British exit on March 29 after the U.K. Parliament rejected May's Brexit withdrawal deal with the bloc. Lawmakers threw out the deal Tuesday, in a crushing defeat for May, who suffered the worst parliamentary defeat in modern British history. The drubbing was...

Work on UK nuclear power plant halted over financing impasse

Jan 17, 2019

LONDON — Work on a major new nuclear power station in Britain was suspended after the developer, Japan's Hitachi, said Thursday it had been unable to agree on financing with the U.K. government. Hitachi said Thursday that it was halting work already underway on the Horizon Project, located in Wylfa, on the Welsh island of Anglesey. It will also suspend work on another site located in England. The company had been in talks with the British government for years about how it might support the project financially, including through stock and debt investments. The suspension is a blow to the...
