This newly launched tool takes into account a range of child support factors to help people get an understanding of what child support they could owe or be owed. There are a range of factors that could influence child support numbers. The two main kickers are each party’s income and the amount of parenting time days.

When parents are employed, their income is usually easy to figure out but can become complicated by things like bonuses and stock options. The same thing is true of parents who are on government assistance. When parents are self-employed, figuring out their income can be even harder.

Parenting time days is the number of days each parent receives each year to care for the child. The general rule of thumb is if the child is in your care for 12 hours or more, that day is counted in your tally. When we see a parent having 100% (365 days) of the parenting time, it is likely they will be receiving child support, unless otherwise deviated or a significant disparity of income between the parents.

Health insurance can also play a defining role in child support amounts. The parent who provides health insurance will get credit for how much it costs to insure the child alone each month with health insurance. Dental and vision insurance are also included. Private school tuition and childcare costs may also apply. Neither private school tuition nor childcare expenses are required to be ordered, but the parties can agree to include those figures or the Court can decide to include them.

The calculator considers all of these factors and others such as the age of the child, any ordered child support payments for other children, any other children not covered by a child support order but for whom a parent has financial responsibility, and any court-ordered spousal maintenance (alimony) a parent is required to pay or receive.
